A new survey by Media Research International (MRI) a European based research house has declared Kawa FM radio station as the leading online radio station in Uganda. The survey samples 2,500 listeners among the online community with 50% living within Uganda and 50% living outside Uganda.
Kawa FM scored highly within those who spoke and understood Luganda while others who listened to it said they loved it for its crystal clear sound and music selection. The other stations that featured in this survey results were Galaxy FM at number two, Radio Simba at number three, KFM at number four, Capital Radio at number five, XFM at number 6, CBS radio at number 7, Radio City at number 8, Akaboozi at number 9 and Sanyu FM at number 10.
Online radio stations are listened to through computers and smartphones by clicking a link that plays their broadcast.
The results come as a surprise because when Kawa FM radio station was launched two years ago, few gave it a chance to survive considering that online radio was a nonstarter in Uganda.
Unlike Galaxy and Simba, Kawa FM does not run on a radio frequency. It is an online station with a very clear signal that is heard across the world on their link http://goo.gl/BnuABe
Akot Sharon, the promotions manager of Kawa FM speaking to the investigator said “this comes as a surprise to us because we did not know about this survey or that people regarded us so highly. We shall continue doing our best to serve our listeners that come from different countries of the world.”
Kawa FM is owned by Radio Expert Joel Isabirye who for unknown reasons launched several online radio stations two years ago. There were rumours they were bankrolled by President Museveni, a claim Akot denies.
